Get the habitat right.
Independent buyer guides for new reptile keepers — enclosures, heating and thermostats, UVB and lighting, and the habitat and monitoring gear that holds it all together. The kit compared on the specs that actually matter, the rookie mistakes spelled out, and tools that match the gear to your species. Written by a keeper who would rather get the animal a setup it can live well in than sell you the wrong first kit.
Read the beginner's guide →Specs verified against manufacturer and Amazon listings · No fake hands-on claims · General husbandry information, not veterinary advice — verify for your species, vet for health

Three doors. Where you start depends on whether you are still planning, ready to buy the gear, or want to match a setup to your species.
I'm setting up my first vivarium
Read the beginner guide. Why the environment comes before the décor, the three things that must be right, enclosure types in plain English, and the rookie mistakes to skip.
Open →I want the gear for my species
Compare enclosures, heating, UVB and habitat gear on the specs that matter — sized and sourced for a setup your animal can actually live well in.
Open →I want to match my setup to my species
Use the setup tools. Enter a species to get the enclosure footprint, basking wattage, UVB index and thermostat type it needs, plus substrate and humidity.

Enclosures
Glass terrarium versus PVC vivarium, terrestrial versus arboreal, footprint by species and ventilation — and why a bigger enclosure that holds a real gradient beats a small, uniformly warm box.
View guides →Heating & Thermostats
Basking lamps, ceramic heat emitters and heat panels, on/off versus dimming thermostats, and how to build a real temperature gradient. A thermostat is non-negotiable.
View guides →UVB & Lighting
UV index by species, T5 HO versus compact, lamp distance and mounting height, and the replacement cycle. The part beginners get wrong most, and the one the animal can least afford wrong.
View guides →Habitat & Monitoring
Substrate, hides, décor, thermometers and hygrometers, and humidity control — plus the setup tools that match the gear to your species. The layer that proves your gradient is real.

Best ball python enclosures
Enclosures compared on type, footprint, material and ventilation — the cleanest path to a first enclosure that holds a real heat gradient.
Best basking bulbs for bearded dragons
Heat lamps compared on type, wattage, thermostat compatibility and coverage — the engine of a desert basker’s gradient.
Best UVB lights for bearded dragons
UVB lights compared on type, UVI, tube length and fixture — the index and mounting height a desert basker needs.
Best ball python substrates
Substrates compared on type, material, size and use — the bedding that holds the right humidity without going damp or dusty.

Who writes here
Heat & Hide is founded and written by Dana Calder, a hobbyist reptile keeper near Tucson, Arizona, who has kept reptiles for 12+ years — currently a leopard gecko, a crested gecko and a ball python. Dana started the site after watching too many beginners set up the way the pet-store kit suggested and end up with a stressed, off-colour animal because the heat gradient, the thermostat or the UVB was wrong. Guides also draw on rotating contributors from the keeping community. Product comparisons stay neutral and spec-led — no fabricated hands-on testing. Read more about how we work →
